Post-operative instructions to support your recovery. If anything concerns you, do not hesitate to get in touch.
After surgery a gauze pad is placed between the teeth to reduce post-operative bleeding. If bleeding continues, the pad can be replaced after 30 minutes. Slight bleeding after oral surgery is normal.
Keep a cold pack against the cheek as much as possible for the first two days after surgery. This helps prevent facial swelling.
Start chlorhexidine rinses (red Paroex) on the day after surgery and continue for one week.
The sutures placed on the oral mucosa are dissolvable. We use thin monofilament sutures, which dissolve slowly. If they bother you, they can be removed two weeks after surgery. Monofilament suture softens after two weeks and dissolves completely within about three to four weeks.
Keep to a soft diet for one week after surgery, and to cool foods for the first two days.
A slight rise in body temperature is normal after surgery. If you develop a clear fever — over 38 °C — please get in touch. Post-operative infection is a rare but possible complication.
Take the prescribed post-operative medication regularly and as instructed.
Restricted mouth opening after surgery is common. Start jaw exercises one week after surgery and continue until normal opening returns.
Smoking is prohibited after surgery. It can predispose to wound infection and delayed healing.
